The provenance of th piece is not known, although the style is thought to be Bayon (1177-1237). As it would be a monument of major religious significance, it is unlikely that this piece is an authentic ancient artifact. It was probably the result of a collaboration of a village of Cambodian restoration carvers who happened upon a piece of magnificent stone and decided to build the most exotic and detailed type of Khmer artistry their skills would permit. This piece was a project that probably took years to complete.
